Coropuna
Coropuna is situated at Cordillera Occidental of the Andes in Southern Peru. It is a religious area for the Incas who probably were the first to reach its summit. In 1911, the first recorded climb to Coropuna was made by Hiram Bingham.
For the Incas, Coropuna is a religious area. They called it Kjori Puna, which means "golden mountain". It was believed that aside from being the first to reach the summit, they probably did some human sacrifice on Coropuna.
How to Get There
Coropuna is situated 95 miles northwest of Arequipa, Peru.
From Lima, Peru, go to Arequipa either by plane. Otherwise, take the Pan American Highway route.
Best Time to Climb
Climbing conditions are favorable from May until early part of September.
