The NZMGA training and certification programme aims to promote high minimum standards of climbing, skiing, mountain craft, snow safety, emergency procedures and responsible guide/client relationships amongst professional climbing, ski and glacier guides. The Association gained international recognition in 1981, becoming the eighth member of the International Union of Mountain Guides Associations.
