In 1840, Kosciuszko was named by Paul Strzelecki, a Polish explorer. This is to honor the Polish national hero, Tadeusz Kosciuszko. The name of the Polish patriot was first recorded incorrectly - Kosciusko. However, since 1940, there has been growing pressure to return the name to its correct form. With the backing of such notable people as Pope Paul II and former Australian prime minister Gough Withlam, the movement finally succeeded and in March 1997, the NSW Geographical Names Board formally added the z.

The Main Range Walk is one of the most famous day walks. It is a 22km circuit and includes four glacial lakes, with view of Mount Sentinel and Watsons' Crags.

The walk to Mount Kosciuszko is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. In the months of January and February, there is a wide array of flora in bloom that will surely catch your attnetion. The Kosciuszko plateau is a treeless expanse very much like the Scottish Highlands. The vegetation varies from dense pine to eucalyptus and thorny vegetation. In the summer, there are colorful flowers, like buttercups and forget-me-nots. This section is dedicated to the History, When To Go, and the Walking Routes of Kosciuszko.

TRAILS & ROUTES
General    The two most popular routes is from Thredbo to the south and from Charlottes Pass to the southeast.

At Charlottes Pass, 1840m, there is a large car park that can be reached via the Kosciuszko Road. Beyond this car park, one can continue either on foot or on bike via a gravel track heading west. Cars are forbidden here. It passes Seaman's Hut, an old stone-walled, metal-roofed emergency refuge and the highest building in Australia. The track finally circles around the back (north) of the summit to end after 8 km, only a stone's throw from the highest point. This route is mostly taken by cross-country skiers during the winter months.

Thredbo is Australia's most expensive downhill skiing resort. This trail begins with a 600 m ascent through forested terrain, but most people take the Crackenback Chairlift to the same point and save two hours of steep walking. From there, it is 7km on a steel track to the summit.
