Mount of the Holy Cross
Mount of the Holy Cross is one of the best known Colorado Fourteener. It is famous for its east-facing couloir in the form of a cross which is highly visible when filled with snow.
The mountain was first discovered in 1869, and became the destination of Christian pilgrimages in the 1920's. The mountain was once a National Monument, but lost that status in the 50's because the cross lost its prominence due to erosion. During the 70's Holy Cross became a wilderness.
The approach to the summit over Notch Mountain and along halo Ridge will give one a look at the mountain's cross.
How to Get There
From Interstate Highway 70, get off at exit 171. Head south on 24 a couple miles to the town of Minturn until you see Tigiwon Rd. on the right. Turn onto Tigiwon and prepare for 8 miles of uphill gravel and dirt.
