Mount Eolus
Mt. Eolus is located in the Needle Mountain Range in the San Juan Mountains, and is named for the Greek God of the Winds, Aeolus. At 14,083 feet, it is the 32nd highest peak in Colorado. Eolus is grouped with Sunlight Peak and Windom Peak as the three most remote of Colorado fourteeners.
The best time to climb is late June through September. Most parties prefer to set up camp in Chicago Basin before summiting because of its easy access to Eolus and the other 2 peaks.
How to Get There
To reach Sunlight, Windom, and Eolus from the west, use the Needleton trailhead. The most common way to reach the trailhead is by the Silverton-Durango train.
