Blanca Peak
At 14,345 feet, Blanca Peak is the fourth highest peak in Colorado and the highest peak in the Sangre de Cristo Range. Blanca is near other three fourteeners: Ellingwood Point to the north, Little Bear Peak to the south and Mount Lindsey to the east. Blanca Peak is known to the Navajos as the "Sacred Mountain of the East."
The best time to climb is from late June to early September. Mosquitoes are fierce at Como Lakes in early July and it is advisable to carry a head/neck net. There are no fees or permits required for this area and Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace code should rule.
How to Get There
Take the Colorado 150 road off of the Colorado 160 road east of Alamosa. Colorado 150 goes north towards the Great Sand Dunes. Drive about 3.2 miles and turn right onto Lake Como road. There is a small parking/turnaround area at the beginning of the road. Most vehicles have to park 1.5 to 2.5 miles up Lake Como road before the road turns nasty.
