Mt. San Gorgonio
Mt. San Gorgonio which is also known as the “Old Greyback” is the the highest mountain in Southern California. The mountain offers unparalleled view of metropolitan Los Angeles and the Mojave Desert. It is also very popular with several trails that lead to the summit, with the South Fork Trail as the most popular and is over 10-miles one-way. The shortest way is the Vivian Creek Trail. Mt. San Gorgonio is a great mountain to climb anytime of the year thus tends to be crowded during the summer. The mountain is also great for snowshoeing during winter.
Mt. San Gorgonio is a part of the San Gorgonio Wilderness which receives approximately 200,000 visitors per year. The wilderness is characterized by 58,969 acres harbor two small lakes, meadows, streams, 100 miles of trail, densely forested northern slops and rugged terrains.
The San Gorgonio Wilderness is relatively snow-free from June through December. During them months of July and August, brief thunder and lightning is common occurrence during the afternoon. The average summer temperatures are 75º F to 80º F degree highs, with nighttime lows of upper 40's and lower 50's (Fahrenheit).
The wilderness offers great opportunities for solitude during the winter and spring months. Miles of backcountry terrain is available for skilled skiers, offering up to 3500' descents (off the north slope of Mt. San Gorgonio) and moderate cross-country terrain for intermediates.
Snow climbing and mountaineering is a popular winter and spring pursuit for those equipped with ice ax and crampons and suitable skills. During early spring and early summer, less experienced travelers may find difficulty in navigating their way to their intended destination due to lingering snowpack or icy stretches of trail.
