Professional instruction in all aspects of climbing and mountain travel.

California Alpine Guides represents the leading edge of California mountain guiding. Founded by veteran guides and California natives Dave Miller and Scott Brown, CAG strives to help you achieve your goals through distinctive mountain adventures and instruction across the golden state. California's awe-inspiring mountain landscapes are our playground. Come explore with us.

Our Service
We believe in a higher level of mountain guiding. From the food you eat to the instruction you receive every detail is ready and arranged. We take care of you not just from the trailhead, but from the moment you contact us. We can arrange all your vacation needs from lodging packages to recommendations on pre and post- trip activities in the areas you're visiting with CAG. We're also available to help you with any equipment or fitness questions.

We believe in eating well in the mountains, so you're going to eat well. All the food you're served on our trips is of the highest quality possible. Our guides are skilled in the art of backcountry cooking and enjoy preparing a hearty meal after a day in the mountains. No freeze-dried here. On our backcountry overnight trips three meals a day are provided (On select trips lunch may not be provided). On non-backcountry trips lunch and hot drinks are served. And of course, special diets can be accommodated.

Our Professionalism
We believe the best mountain guide is not simply the best climber. Our guides are highly trained professionals with many years of experience not only in climbing and mountain travel, but also in teaching. They are charismatic folks dedicated to the pursuit of mountain adventure who love to share their passion. CAG strongly supports guide education through the American Mountain Guides Association and other professional education providers.

Our Value
We believe in providing you with all the tools for success. In addition to meals, all our trips include group camping equipment such as tents and cooking gear. Helmets, harnesses, ice axes and crampons are included when needed. On winter backcountry trips all avalanche safety equipment such as rescue beacons and shovels are always included. Our guides use only state-of-the-art technical climbing equipment. For anything else we will be happy to help you arrange rental gear.

Our Commitment
We believe our first commitment is to you, the mountain guiding client. Your wellbeing and safety are paramount. We believe in stewardship of the land on which we work and play. We strictly hold to Leave No Trace principles, which means we leave the land in the same, or better, condition in which we found it. We teach LNT principles on all our trips. The land belongs to everyone and must be preserved for all to enjoy.

Ice Climbing  Waterfall ice climbing in California? You bet. The Lee Vining and June Lake area in the Eastern Sierra offers some of the finest ice climbing in the nation. Typically clear days, consistent ice and relatively easy approaches all combine to make the area a fine choice for an ice climbing vacation. From easy top ropes to challenging 4 pitch water ice adventures, we have it all here.

Our ice climbing courses are designed to provide you with a fun and rewarding experience while teaching you all the necessary skills to take yourself higher in the world of water ice climbing. Let's face it, ice climbing is cold so we also provide some small comforts to help ease the bite such as hot drinks and a delicious lunch while on the ice. Our lodging option includes two nights in a warm hotel bed in the resort town of June Lake or Lee Vining. Ice climbing instruction is a perfect way to polish your mountaineering skills.
Mountaineering  Alpine climbing is pure adventure. Also known as mountaineering, it encompasses the full range of climbing disciplines including rock, ice and snow in an "alpine" or mountain environment. Our alpine climbing courses and trips are designed to enable guests of all ability levels to move efficiently through alpine terrain, whether on rock, ice or snow. From the large glaciers of Mt. Shasta to the long alpine rock ridges of the Sierra Nevada, California has all the alpine terrain you'll find anywhere in the world. We look forward to sharing it all with you. For high-altitude alpine climbing in other parts of the world check out our International Program.
Rock Climbing  Our rock climbing courses and vacations are designed to provide you with professional instruction in a fun learning environment. Whether you are simply wishing to give rock climbing a try or have multi-day big walls in mind, we have a course for you.

Our rock climbing program is designed and taught by AMGA certified rock guides with the belief that rock climbing skills are the foundation of all alpine climbing and mountaineering skills. We teach methods of traditional climbing that carry over into other climbing disciplines, which make our courses well suited to those who have big mountains in mind.
