AMG is based in Haines, Alaska, a small community located ninety miles north of Juneau, (the state capital) at the top of the Inside Passage. Haines borders Glacier Bay National Park. The Park and the adjacent 27 million acres, including Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, comprise the largest protected wilderness area on the planet. It is an extremely jagged, glaciated, mountain landscape that includes the world's largest non-polar ice caps, pristine fjords, and wilderness rivers. The elevation of the peaks in this region ranges up to 20,000 feet. This terrain is amongst the best in North America for learning climbing skills, and the sea kayaking, rafting, trekking, and skiing here are world class. Our expedition center in Haines is an outstanding gateway for accessing this unrivaled wilderness area.

The staff of Alaska Mountain Guides places a premium on our guests' experience. Every trip that we lead draws on the experience of countless expeditions in Alaska, South America, Africa and Asia. Our leaders are committed professionals who are exemplary guides and instructors. We are dedicated to insuring our guests an experience that exceeds their expectations!

Our programs strive to exceed individual expectations. We are dedicated to developing competent, confident climbers. Attention to detail and safety, and an emphasis on fun, are all important parts of the Alaska Mountain Guides & Climbing School experience.

SCHEDULES & ACTIVITIES
This course is designed as a hands-on introduction to safe mountaineering. We will spend five days moving through the mountains and across massive glaciers, plunging ourselves into a world of jagged peaks and brilliant blue ice falls.

Our trip begins with a spectacular ski plane flight into the mountains. After we establish a camp we will begin to learn crampon, ice axe, and rope team skills. Training in avalanche awareness, anchor techniques, belaying, crevasse rescue, navigation, and hazard/risk assessment are covered as you gain experience. Conditions permitting we will attempt two climbs during the course that will put your new skills to use!

This course allows the practical application of your new skills. Our philosophy is one of learn by doing. Small groups and a low participant to instructor ratio give us the flexibility to accommodate individual goals and expectations. No previous experience is necessary.

Hi Sean and Darsie,
Thanks for your beginning mountaineering course the last week of July with Eli, Robbie, and Rachel. They were SO patient and compassionate with me. To be out there on the glacier was an amazing experience for me. I got a lot out of it, in ways I didn't expect.... All 3 of them are exceptional people and I was lucky to have them be the ones who introduced me to this "sport" (though it seems more like a frame of mind...).
Thanks again,
Trish M.
