Purcell & Selkirk Mountains of the West Kootenays
The Purcell & Selkirk Mountains is our playground for Kootenay Mountain Holidays INc. The area is known for its mining history and old trails lead us across mountainous terrain, only few have seen. High alpine peaks, summits and plateaus offer skitouring, hiking, backpacking and mountaineering opportunities for all level of fitness. From our lodge, the Mount Carlyle Lodge, we enjoy the spectacular view onto the Kokanee and Cariboo Glacier, only two of many other glaciated regions in the Kootenays.
Low elevation interior temperate rainforest offers old growth cedar-hemlock stands and green lush forest ecosystems. Kootenay Lake in between the Purcell and Selkirk Mountains is a 140 km lake lush in aquatic life. A great place to relax after a mountain experience up high.
Our location for guided trips and mountain lodge vacations was selected because of the regions beauty, uncrowded wilderness and great climate for all of our acitvities we share with our guests. Come and join us.

| General |
WE offer guided trip on the classic Earl Grey Pass Traverse, the Valhalla Traverse, and trips to the Mount Carlyle Lodge, with Mount Carlyle as one of our summit experiences. Besides our guided trips, there are many other day hiking programs which can be done without a guide. " Don't waist your time in the Kootenays" by Kathy Copeland is the going guidebook which fills you in. Also the little mountain town of Kaslo has many trails for mountian bikers and hikers right outside the town. A combination of a guided hiking experience and your own ventures into the Canadian Wilderness are the way to go to stay safe and to avoid bear problems. |
| Camping | Great camping along Kootenay Lake on Forest Recreation Campgrounds or private campgrounds. Private Campgrounds are Lakewood Inn, Mirrow Lake Campground, or Woodbury Campground. | | Fitness | I would suggest to be relatively fit for the Kootenays. Most trails are moderate to advanced. | | Hiking | There is an unlimited amount of hiking into the local provincial parks, Kookanee, Valhalla, Purcell Wilderness, Bugaboos and West Arm Provincial Parks. Also on crown land many forest recreation trails take you up high and into the deep forest. The local guide book is called Don't Waist Your Time in the Kootenays. | | Mountaineering | Glacier Creek offers great mountaineering opportunities. | | Personal Development | Corporate Mountain Culture with Discovery Canada offers a highend Personal Development program at www.corporate-mountain-culture.com | | Rock Climbing | Slocan Bluffs and the Canare Bluffs are the local sport climbing area. Mulvey Basin is the classic area for alpine climbing |
