A First Approach to Mountaineering

A First Approach to Mountaineering is organized by “Campo Base” (Cuneo) in collaboration with Global Mountain from June 17-19 and 24-26. The course is dedicated entirely to learning the practical skills and basic techniques of modern mountaineering. Lessons on Approaching Mountaineering will take place on the faces of the Castello-Provenzale Group, a mountain which is synonymous of mountaineering in the Maira Valley, Piedmont.
Details of the course is as follows:
- Friday June 17th. Dinner at “Campo Base”, followed by a multimedia photographic conference on Mountaineering, Climbing and Via Ferrata in the Maira Valley.
- Saturday June 18th and Sunday June 19th.
- Basic progression: front and lateral stability on deck and vertical surfaces; distribution of strengths and position of the barycentre during the approach, description of the body position in both, static and dynamic phases of movement;
- Progression on the rope: securing the lead and second lead climber, self securing methods when standing and during climbing, descent methods;
- Knots: securing, breaking and anchoring knots;
- Basic on site mountaineering notions: preparation of the backpack, understanding weather forecasts and bulletins, studying alternative routes, necessary clothes and equipment.
Friday June 24 - Sunday 26
- Friday June 24th. The course second weekend will open with a conference on Geology and mountaineering by Enrico Collo, geologist and expert populariser.
- Saturday June 25th and Sunday June 26th.
- Cartography (evening): interpretation/map reading, choice of route, assessment of the route its slopes, type of terrain, decision making in case of poor visibility (azimuth);
- Safety (evening): key role elements during progression and fall, choice of progression and securing methods depending on the ground surface;
- Progression on multi-rope climbs: a theoretic and practical lesson on safe progression on multi-rope climbs and subsequent double rope descents;
- Stops: use of quick protection tools (nuts, friends, nails) during progression and pauses;
- Natural protection.
