North America's highest peak had claimed two fatalities in a matter of less than a week. Two climbers fell to their death in Alaska's Mount McKinley, only a few days apart from each other.
The first victim, a Swiss national, Beat Niederer, was part of a team together with Jeremiah O'Sullivan, an Irish national who was rescued at 19,500 feet by helicopter. The body of the 38-year old Swiss was recovered in the late hours of May 12 by helicopter. The man from St. Gallen, Switzerland, died from unknown causes near 18,000 feet. Members of his party were part of those rescued by helicopter as sub-zero temperatures battered the mountain last week.
Following Niederer's fate was Italian national Luciano Colombo, 67, who died while descending, plunging 1,000 feet. The unroped climber slipped as he was making a traverse in a location near Denali pass when he plunged to his death on May 16.
Known to be a highly dangerous area, the Denali Pass had claimed numerous climbers annually. Climbers have ever since been warned to be roped when traversing this mountain.
