Rock Climbing Company Announce an Extended Season

THURSDAY, 25 MARCH 2010

This high early season demand for mountain skills courses means that the Rock Climbing Company is fast becoming one of the major providers of outdoor pursuits in North Wales and continues the company's strong performance from 2009.

A lot of the requests for courses have been for mountain scrambling courses from experienced hill walkers who are keen to tackle more adventurous terrain and want to learn the skills necessary to move safely on steep, mountainous ground.

This increased demand for adventurous activities is exemplified by the demand for courses to climb Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, by the exposed Crib Goch ridge. It is no longer enough for many people to climb Snowdon via the normal walking routes (Pyg Track and Miners Track), instead they want to get to the summit via the difficult and dramatic scramble along the rocky Crib Goch ridge.

The demand for scrambling courses has been backed up with a steady demand for rock climbing courses from people who want to know how to climb outside after learning to climb inside on climbing walls.

The weather this weekend was perfect for the first courses of the year in North Wales. The alpine backdrop of snow on the high mountains contrasted strongly with the warmth of the sun on lower ground and allowed all the courses to run perfectly.

Silvia Fitzpatrick, owner of the Rock Climbing Company, is delighted that the season is starting strongly, especially as there is still a strong demand for courses in Spain. She said 'the continued growth of the company is a pleasant surprise especially at a time when we are in a period of uncertainty and only just out of a recession. It is a lot of work managing the growth, but it is a very nice problem to have.'

The strong start to the season coincided with a meeting of the core mountaineering organisations in Cardiff with members of the Welsh Assembly Government to champion the importance of adventure activity tourism to the North Wales economy.

It also comes on the back of DMM, a premium climbing equipment manufacturer based in North Wales, launching a new and critically acclaimed range of climbing hardware. This received national coverage from the media and Silvia is proud to have been involved closely with this project that helps further strengthen the North Wales economy.
