New Irish Tour for 2010

FRIDAY, 29 JANUARY 2010

This Irish tour is one of the Classic, guided walking tours, rated easy to moderate, with an average of 3-8 miles per day and options on some days.

Waterbury, Vermont, January 27, 2010 – Today Country Walkers announced a new Irish tour for 2010. This exciting new excursion is steeped in the centuries-old history and legends of Ireland. From Belfast, journey to the basaltic cliffs of Fair Head for dramatic views of the rocky coast and (in good weather) nearby Scotland. Board a ferry to Rathlin Island and follow paths to ochre-colored cliffs to spot kittiwakes, razorbills, puffins, seals, and other wildlife.

The new Irish tour is called Northern Ireland: The Causeway Coast & the Mournes.

Northern Ireland: The Causeway Coast & the Mournes

This Irish tour is one of the Classic, guided walking tours, rated easy to moderate, with an average of 3-8 miles per day and options on some days. The terrain is fairly flat, however, the footing is often uneven and can be slippery when wet. Walks pass through sandy and rocky beaches, grassy headlands, pastures, coastal villages, bogs, woodlands, and more may include stepping over 4-5-foot-high stiles or across small streams. Walking sticks are recommended. The pace on this tour is leisurely to allow time to fully appreciate the area’s wide variety of ecosystems. The itinerary includes an optional 3-hour kayaking exploration (no experience required); playful seals and porpoises abound.

On this Irish tour, travelers will marvel at the closely knit hexagonal stone columns and the corresponding folklore about the giant Finn MacCool, who supposedly placed these very stones. As walkers stop for a picnic among the weathered ruins of Dunseverick Castle, the fragrant scent of blooming yellow gorse among the dunes in the Murlough Nature Reserve dominates. Discover the Gothic and Classical design styles of Castle Ward House, built in the 1760s for Lord and Lady Bangor. In the heart of the Mournes, Ireland’s highest mountain range, enter a fairy-tale setting of hazel woods and mysterious grottoes. No trip would be complete without a refreshing cup of tea in front of an old-fashioned peat fire, a Bushmills whiskey from the world’s oldest distillery, or freshly caught seafood in colorful fishing towns.
