Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards Announced

The Government has announced the awardees of Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards (TNNAA) for the year 2007. The Central Selection Committee for selection of the Awardees for the year 2007 met under the Chairmanship of Dr. M.S. Gill, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and unanimously selected the following persons for the TNNAA awards for the year 2007:
• Land Adventure Award: Nb. Subedar Mohinder Singh; Sub. Neel Chand
• Air Adventure Award: Air Commdr. T.K. Rath
• Lifetime Achievement Award: Capt. M.S. Kohli

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports conferred the National Adventure Awards with a view to give due recognition to the achievements made by persons in the field of adventure. The awards have been renamed as Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards. The Award consists of a bronze statuette, a scroll of honour, a blazer with a silken tie/a saree and cash award of Rs. 3,00,000 - or the same amount as for Arjuna Award for that particular year.
The awards will be given away along with Arjuna Awards by the honorable President of India in a special function on 29th August 2008.
The brief achievements of all the four awardees are as follows:
- Nb. Subedar Mohinder Singh: Resident of District Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh and has climbed Mt. Everest in May 2001. He showed conspicuous courage and highest sense of team spirit in achieving these feats, which brought laurels to the country. His successful climbing of Mana Peak (7273M) in 2000, Everest (8848M) in 2001, Kanchenjunga (8586M) in 2004, and Mt. Shishapangma (8046M) in 2005 are creditable achievements, which have brought laurels to the Army and the country. As instructor at National Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi has contributed substantially towards promotion of mountaineering in the country by training the young people at NIM.
- Subedar Neel Chand: He is resident of District Lahaul Spiti, Himachal Pradesh and has participated in a large number of expeditions since 1995. He climbed Mana (7273M) Peak in 2000, Everest (8848M) in 2001, Annapurna 1 (8091M) in 2002, Lhotse (8518M) in 2003, Kanchenjunga (8586M) in 2004, and Shisha Pangma (8046M) in 2005. He also participated to the Joint Indo-Australian Expedition to the Mt. Shivling (6543M) in the year 2007.
- Air Commodore Tushar Kanti Rath: He is active in the field of aero sports and adventure since 1971. He is qualified para jumper and sky diving instructor since 1975 and is an active sky diver until today. In 1997, he led Indian delegation in sky diving competition in first World Air Game at Turkey. In 1999, he became the first sky diver to jump in Lakshadweep Island and also became National Record Holder for sky diving landing at 14800 feet in 2003. He became the first person to sky dive from CSTW Microlight at Hindon in the year 2007.
- Capt. M.S. Kohli: He is renowned mountaineer who organized a Naval Expedition to Nanda Kot (22510 ft.) and summited it. He reached up to (26,200 ft.) South Col during Mt. Everest Expedition in 1960. He reached up to (28,600 ft.) during Expedition Second Mt. Everest in 1962. He scaled Mt. Everest as leader of the first successful Everest Expedition and put nine numbers on the peak in 1965. After retirement, he has written more than a dozen books on mountaineering and helped popularized the adventure sports. He is an active member of Himalayan Environment Trust. He was also President of Indian Mountaineering Foundation.
