Exum Guide Dies in Grand Teton Accident

WEDNESDAY, 23 JULY 2008
Submitted By: Diane Vee Hormillada

Exum Mountain Guides are currently mourning over the death of 58-year old George Gardner, an Exum mountaineering/climbing guide for 17 years who recently passed away after an accident in Grand Teton, Wyoming.

According to reports, Gardner, other Exum guides, a group of clients, and young climbers from Wilderness Ventures went to Lower Saddle to scale Grand Teton last Saturday, July 19. After the group settled in for the night, Gardner went out on a solo climb. The following morning, fellow guides noticed that Gardner had failed to return and immediately contacted Jack Turner, Exum Mountain Guides President. Turner called Teton Interagency Dispatch Center for assistance.

Grand Teton National Park rangers immediately responded and went to the location. Gardner's body was found at around 6am near an area called the Eye of the Needle. Park rangers are still investigating the accident, and the cause of death is still unknown.
