Indo-African Expedition to Mt. Kilimanjaro

Jamshedpur - An 'all women' team under the aegis of Ms. Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to climb Mt. Everest, is all set to scale the heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. The team's journey to Mt. Kilimanjaro was flagged off by Mr. Rituraj, Chief (Corporate Relations), Tata Steel. The function was organized to boost the morale of the daring and determined ladies who are taking up this challenging expedition.

The team consists of working women, including six mothers and students who have been selected by Ms. Bachendri Pal who has prior experience in mountaineering. The names of the participants are Lovely Das from West Bengal, Rajal Patel from Gujarat, Sushma Bissa from Rajasthan, Parul Sahu from Madhya Pradesh, Kalpana Dash from Orissa, and from Jharkhand L Annapurna, Premlata Agarwal, Chetna Sahoo, and Anita Soren from Jharkhand. Anita Soren is a tribal girl from a remote village of Kesorsora in Seraikela Kharswan District West Singhbhum Jharkhand. She has accompanied Ms. Bachendri Pal during the Karakoram Pass Expedition in 2006 and the Thar Desert Expedition in 2007. One more member will be joining from the Tata Africa Ltd. Ms. Christina John Mlowe is working in the Marketing office at Dar-e-Salaam, Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro is the largest of an E-W belt of about 20 volcanoes near the southern end of the East African Rift Valley. It is a giant stratovolcano reaching an elevation of 19,335 ft (5,895 m). It is not only the tallest free standing mountain of the world but also among the largest volcanoes on earth. Machame Route, which is a very tough route to the top, has been selected for the climb. This will be the first time that an Indo-African All Women Team is taking up the challenge and making this attempt.
