The number of climbing expeditions on the Nepali side of Himalayas is on its way to the peak. According to the report by the Kathmandu Post, 31 expeditions are already headed towards Mt. Qomolangma, the central attraction, this spring season. This is way more than the 24 climbing parties that took the challenge last year.
Similar situation also takes place at other Himalayan peaks. Dinesh Hari Adhikari, joint secretary of the Tourism Industry Division of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, said they have already granted climbing permits to 85 teams this season, as compared to only six dozens in 2007.
Mid-March to May is considered the most favorable time for mountaineering in Nepal. The end of the conflict in Nepal had also encouraged more mountaineers to climb the great peaks of Himalayas. According to Adhikari, other expeditions are expected to arrive in the next week or two.
