French Speed Flyer Makes Descent of Aconcagua
WEDNESDAY, 26 MARCH 2008
French rider François Bon made a speed-flying descent of the south face of Aconcagua, one of the world’s great mountain walls.
Bon reached the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere under an early-winter condition. He descended the 9,000-foot south face in four minutes and 50 seconds and topped the 22, 841-foot Aconcagua.
Having been accomplished a descent of the Eiger by the west and north faces, and the Mont Blanc, Bon becomes the most high-profile speed flyer in the world.
Speed flying or speed riding is a combination of free skiing and high-speed paragliding.
In 1954, a French team pioneered a climb on the Aconcagua’s southern wall.
