The Schoening ice axe, one of climbing’s most historic artifacts, was transferred to the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum last week. The wooden ice axe will be exhibited at the museum in Colorado at its opening ceremony on February 16, 2008.
The ice axe was an instrument in saving lives back in 1953 when Pete Schoening saved five falling climbers on K2. Now, it has represented the pinnacle of the ethics of mountaineering.
Schoening was a pioneer mountaineer who led the first ascents of Mount Augusta and the East Ridge of King Peak in 1952.
