Three Mountaineers Climbed to Release Burdens

TUESDAY, 24 JULY 2007

Three recent climbers of the 22, 840-foot summit of the Cerro Aconcagua expressed their emotions and the reasons why they decided to traverse the summit of the said mountain. Seth Webb, Jordan White, and Greg Newman have their own reasons why they went on ascending Cerro Aconcagua. While one lost his mother, the other one lost his father, and the third one is in the stage of nurturing what he’d lost through a devastating illness.

Webb, Coordinator for the Office of International Programs for Colorado State University, lost his mother through a pulmonary embolism a year ago. He said that while climbing the mountain, he believes that his mother was with him and supporting him as he tried to reach the top.

As for Jordan White, a student from CSU, he lost his father via climbing accident a year ago. He said that he offered his climb to Cerro Aconcagua to his father who was an avid mountaineer. During his climb, he brought a Frisbee disc wherein he wrote a message for his father. When he reached the peak, White released the disc off the mountain.

When White threw the disc off the mountain it released of all the baggage that they had been carrying not in their packs, but in their hearts.

Another climber, Greg Newman was a colon cancer survivor. He was very adamant of joining the mountaineering team to regain the strength and zest for life that he lost when he got cancer.

When White threw the disc off the mountain, Newman said he felt that all the frustrations he felt due to his illness were suddenly released.

After reaching the summit, the exhausted group headed back to the base of the mountain. For many the mountain was now another challenge they had tackled. “Mountaineering is really a metaphor for life,” Webb said. “It shows us the challenges and adversaries we face.”
