MONDAY, 28 MAY 2007
Three Filipino women recently made it to the top of the world's highest peak and conquered Mount Everest. They became the first ever women to traverse Mt. Qomolangma by climbing it from the north side in China and come down to the south side of the mountain in Nepal.
Janet Belarmino, Noelle Wenceslao and Carina Dayondon are members of the First Philippine Mount Everest Expedition who became the first women from Southeast Asian countries to conquer the world's highest peak. According to Art Valdez who is the team leader of the expedition, their effort was well-paid of as three petite Filipino women, who saw snow just three years ago in India, managed to succeed in seemingly "mission impossible." He further added that climbing Mount Qomolangma is a way of showing the human spirit perseverance determination to achieve what is perceived to be the impossible.
Meanwhile, twenty-eight year old Janet Belarmino gave birth just five months ago and left her month old baby to join the Mount Everest Expedition team. She said it was so difficult to leave her son at home with her husband but her baby was her source of inspiration when she was on top of the world's highest peak. Belarmino who has great reverence for the mighty mountains even named her five-month-old boy "Himalaya". The team are scheduled to return home on the first week of June and will receive a hero’s welcome.
