Mountaineers Banned from Climbing Mount Apo

THURSDAY, 26 APRIL 2007

A local Davao mountaineering group will be ban by the Mount Apo Range Natural Park Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) from climbing Mount Apo. The blacklist sanction against the mountaineering group is among the recommendations to the PAMB after one of their climber was drowned in Mount Apo's lake.

Mindanao Alliance Mountaineering Club (MALMOC) will be ban from climbing Mount Apo for three years. DENR's regional director Bonifacio Apura said that the club violated rules in climbing Mount Apo like swimming and bathing in Lake Venado where Ian Caasi, a would-be member of MALMOC was drowned after he went swimming on April 5 earlier this month. He said the lake was dangerous because it was a crater.

According to the Department of Tourism regional director Sonia Garcia, the sanction will be among the biggest issues she will raise in the upcoming general assembly of the Mountaineers Federation of Southern Mindanao (MFSM).
