WEDNESDAY, 28 FEBRUARY 2007
Thirty-nine newly trained high altitude mountain rescuers received their certificates after completing the program which was conducted by the Nepal Mountaineering Instructors' Association in Langtang mountain range in Rasuwa.
Twenty-three of the trained mountain rescuers achieved the skills of working as commanders, five as assistant trainers and 21 as supporters according to Da Gombu Sherpa, President of Nepal Mountaineering Training Association. The training is the second in a series and the French Embassy along with its partners are looking forward to conduct the training on a regular basis to prepare 100 rescuers by 2009. More than 80 mountaineers are recorded to have died in the mountain on harsh weather and an estimated of 10-15 lost their lives in a single season.
The training cost as much as Rs 80,000 individually and fees are being charged to ensure that irrelevant persons do not come for training just to try a new hobby. French government has been launching programs to ensure the safety of the Nepalese mountains after some French mountaineers died at Kangaru and Choyu Mountains. They felt a need to train many numbers of high mountain rescuers according to Michel Jolivet, French ambassador to Nepal.
