A Winchester woman mis-stepped and fell almost 150 feet while climbing at Nelson Rocks County Preserve in Pendleton County, West Virginia.
Amanda Joy Crawford, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was using the proper safety equipment, but unhooked one of her lines to go around a tree, according to police reports.
The type of mountain climbing that the victim was doing is called Via Ferratta. Via Ferratta is a type of mountain climbing route with a safety system permanently installed, making the climb suitable for persons with no prior training and minimal equipment. The climber is attached at all times to a steel cable which runs along the entire route. No climbing rope is generally required.
Although this type of climbing is rare, we must remember that any type of mountain climbing is dangerous.
