Mountaineer Harish Kapadia will receive the Golden King Albert Mountain Award for his outstanding explorations in the Himalaya and for his literary achievements on the subject of mountain sport.
Kapadia, who is an Honorary member of the Alpine Club in London and the American Alpine Club in USA, has written books which give readers an insight into the personal feelings one experiences in the face of danger and death as well as an aid in imagining the motivation behind a passion for the desolate and harsh world of high mountain peaks. That is one factor that the King Albert I Gold Medal recognizes. Likewise, he has been involved in working for the Peace Park located on the war-torn Siachen Glacier. He began this since his son Lt. Nawang Kapadia of the Indian Army was killed while fighting terrorists in Kashmir.
Kapadia has been into climbing for 40 years particularly exploring the Himalaya. Besides his 15 books about his travels and aspects of the Himalayan regions, he is the first Indian to receive this Gold Medal. His other achievements include receiving the Patron’s Medal of Royal Geographic Society by the British Monarchy and Tenzing Norgay Life Time Achievement Award for Adventures by the President of India.
