Schoolgirls on a High after Kilimanjaro Climb

TUESDAY, 11 JULY 2006

Team of five girls planted their school flag on top of Africa’s highest peak as part of their school’s centenary celebrations.

Joined by teachers, parents and other relatives, the 5 students of St. Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Durban, South Africa celebrated the school’s achievements in the past 100 years by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. The group climbed Kilimanjaro using the Machame route, starting at Machame Village at 1 500m above sea level to Uhuru Peak at 5 895m, taking five days to get to the summit.

An extra day was taken before the two-day hike down began for the group to acclimatize on the mountain.
