Mukherjee Flags in Army Expeditions


FRIDAY, 30 JUNE 2006

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee flagged-in two successful Army expeditions to Mount Cho Oyu and Bhagirathi today.

The team scaled Cho Oyu from the traditional South West route, the first batch of scaled the peak on May 24 while the second batch on May 26. The expedition was conducted with the aim to train the team for its next venture to attempt Mana peak in August and September before taking on the challenge of Mt. Everest in spring 2007.

Mukherjee complimented the Indian Army for having participated in almost all mountaineering expeditions in Himalayas and described them as the pioneer in mountaineering in India.
