Swedish mountaineer and skier Tomas Olsson’s body was finally discovered some 6,700 meters on Mount Everest last May 20 at 9:30 pm Beijing time, according to various reports. Olsson completed the ascent to the summit with his teammate Norwegian Tormod Granheim last May 16.
From the summit, Olsson and Granheim were planning to ski down the world’s tallest mountain. But at about 8,500 meters, they encountered a 150 foot rock section so they decided to rappel down from it. While on their way down, the anchor broke and Olsson slipped. The accident took place just about two hours after they reached the summit.
On May 17, Granheim along with their other teammate Frederik Schenholm and a duo of Swedish climbers Olof Sundstrom and Martin Letzter began their search of Olsson’s body. According to www.mounteverest.net, a Sherpa found Olsson’s body on May 20 and planned to lower the body some 300 meters below to avoid the avalanche zone and then finally chopper him out yesterday.
