Ice Axes - Types of Ice Axes

Aside from simply knowing the Parts and Features of Ice Axes, it is also important to know the different Types of Ice Axes when Buying Ice Axes. It seems to be an overwhelming task at first, given the different brands and types that you can find in the market. But don't worry. What you can do first is to know what kind of climbing activity you think you would use the Ice Axe most often. From there, proceed to the different types of Ice Axes that will be listed below. There are Three Main Types of Axes: Walking Axes, Mountaineering Axes, and Technical Climbing Axes.

  • Mountaineering Axes
These are the most versatile type of Axes used for walking, climbing, and belaying in conjunction with a rope. The Axes are ideal for climbs up to grade II in difficulty. Mountaineering Axes are usually 55 to 60 cm long, with a curved Pick for better hooking, and stronger Shaft for use in belay construction.

    Examples:
    Grivel's
    Nepal Light Ice Axes
    Mountain Technology's
    Mountaineering Axes
    Charlet Moser's

  • Technical Axes
These are predominantly used for climbing steep snow and ice, and are usually used as a pair consisting of an Ax and a hammer. They are ideal for climbs of grade III and above. Usually 50cm long, with reverse curved Pick for better hooking, ice penetration, and easier removal from ice. Shaft will be bent or curved to allow better clearance during use and increased comfort.
    Examples:
    Charlet Moser's
    Axar Axes 50
    Grivel's
    Alp Wing Adze Ice Axes
    DMM's
    Venom Ice Axes

Knowing which of the Types of Ice Axes fits your needs will save you of the headache that you may have when Buying Ice Axes. Aside from that, using the right type of Ice Axe would ensure you that you are getting the most of the particular Ice Axe type that you have chosen.
