Ice Axes - Types of Ice Axes

- Walking Axes
Walking Axes are predominantly used as Walking Sticks, to arrest a fall, and to occasionally cut steps. It is usually 60 to 75cm long (therefore more comfortable for walking), with a basic Adze and a straight Pick for easier braking in the event of a slip.

- Mountaineering Axes
These are the most versatile type of Axes used for walking, climbing, and belaying in conjunction with a rope. The Axes are ideal for climbs up to grade II in difficulty. Mountaineering Axes are usually 55 to 60 cm long, with a curved Pick for better hooking, and stronger Shaft for use in belay construction.
Examples:
- Technical Axes
These are predominantly used for climbing steep snow and ice, and are usually used as a pair consisting of an Ax and a hammer. They are ideal for climbs of grade III and above. Usually 50cm long, with reverse curved Pick for better hooking, ice penetration, and easier removal from ice. Shaft will be bent or curved to allow better clearance during use and increased comfort.
