I will be in Switzerland and France next month...any suggestions for a short to medium length trip of moderate difficulty?

I expect that the surest bet would be to get a guide. After having paid for the trip there, though, you might not want to spend the dough. There should be, in Chamonix or somewheres thereabout, a Maison de la Randonnee, a hikers' center, where they could recommend some routes. In a worst case scenario, the French IGN maps are pretty good, and the trail network is well maintained and clearly marked both on the maps and on the ground, so you could always get a map, do a good map recon and conceivably do some climbs.

Mount Maudit''s frontier ridge is snow, ice, and rock ridges. Also popular as the "the Kuffner". This is one semi-radical climb that takes you through amazing scenery to a summit with excellent views of Mount Blanc.

Real deal climbing at a really high elevation and even the most experienced climbers need to stay attached to their rope most of the time. This thing is pretty serious too!
