most of you would probably disagree to this but i just went out there and took on the damn thing, no books, no classes, no whatsoever. for me it's the only way to learn.

I have been hiking for a long time, and then moved to the Pyrenees, and joined an outdoors club that organizes, among other things, mountaineering outings. I was actually pretty leery of mountaineering, and went on one of the outings just because I had nothing to do that weekend, and got bit by the bug.

I have been part of this club in college that do a lot of outdoor activities including mountaineering. I loved our climbs so much and the scenery, and continued climbing until now.

Out on the hill with parents then progressed to trips away with friends. Used to go scrambling by myself (scary) then joined a club and started to climb properly (though those who know me disagree!) Anyone here from UK?

You know what, it's good and bad: I can be on some pretty interesting climbs within a few hours of leaving the house, and there is an awesome-looking mountain that dominates the area, but I moved here a pretty short time ago, and have not had enough time to find a climbing partner. And I don't know the routes and all well enough to go soloing, although I have decided that to get to know them, you basically just have to climb them, and trust to luck a bit. It's started snowing at elevation, so now I'm just waiting for enough of it to pile up to climb on.

I didn't know I was! Let me explain: I have hiked the Colorado mountains all of my life (on trails). When I became an adult I realized that I was bored with this. One day I decided to put on my ice climbing boots and my crampons, grabbed an ice axe and went up one of the local couliars on Greys Peak. When arrived at the summit, ecstatic at the climb some guy (and his very hot girlfriend) asked me how long I had been mountaineering and that I made that climb look easy. I scratched my head and sheepishly asked them, well.........what time is it?. I have been mountaineering ever since.
Enjoy the ride
Tim

I started as a hiker (accidentally) , then progressed into rock climbing .. then just getting started into mountaineering now.....
seems like a natural progression type thing.... lol
