how do i get the nasty smell out of water filters? i have an msr water filter (not sure of material but i think it's ceramic), followed instructions on boiling it but i ended up melting it.

usually vinegar and/or baking soda works fine with me, i just soak the filters for a good half hour before i rinse it thoroughly then i'm good to go

with me, i treat my water first with iodine tablet (or any other chemical treatment) before i filter it. more often than not, it's the chemical that leaves the smell in the filter which i don't mind.

get yourself a Steripen, and steripen pre-filter. Run your water through the prefilter first, then 30 seconds/ one minute's worth of ultra violet light from the steripen and your water is purified of all organisms...all organisms. ...who wants to waste precious fuel.
