Hello All:
I'm a brand new to the sport of mountaineering and quite ironically haven't really been much of an "outdoor" sportsman. I'm trying to change that in my 30s. I don't have an extensive history hiking, camping, or rock climbing, but I want to start training for mountaineering. There are a few mountains in California that I think would be easy climbs in the summer to get my feet wet. What should I do? Where should I start? Any recommendations would greatly help.

Hello! Welcome to the forums, and to mountaineering! I suggest you do some workout, build up your muscles, esp your legs. Joining mountaineering or hiking clubs would be helpful as well. Good luck! Let us know when you're starting to climb!

Do a lot of physical training. It takes a lot of mental conditioning as well. Anything can happen when you're out there! Troubleshootong equipment, good rock climbing skills, patience and composure. Those are my tips for the new ones. Do not disrespect the mountain. It breathes and listens to those who wander in it.

For your legs, sprint uphill. Then sprint download. It'll help to gradually increase your endurance. But make sure you control your speed, other wise you'll fall over - and it could take you several days to several weeks to recover.

The best training for mountaineering is actually going out there and doing it. I don't know what your physical condition is, but I would start with some light to moderate hikes. Find beautiful trails where you live and go explore what you never thought was around you. You need endurance (cardiovascular), strength training, balance and you have to train your mind as well. There are always ups and downs in your mind while climbing. You need to prepare yourself for the downs and look forward to the ups.
I go hiking at least once every two weeks, just started indoor rock climbing every week, I do Tae-Bo 3x/wk, yoga every day and Qi-gong about three times per week for mind/body balance. Seems to work out pretty good for me, but every BODY is different and conditions differently.

like in any outdoor activity, you must be physically fit to be able to cope with the challenges of the sport. when i started, i was advised to focus on my strength and endurance. you both have to condition your body and your mindset. always be reminded of your own pace, don;t push yourself with physical exercises all at once. know your body condition, have a medical checkup so you'll minimize potential problems.
practice stretching exercises as this makes the muscles more flexible, avoiding injuries and strain. also important is your breathing, so i advise you to do some breathing exercises. this will help increase cardiovascular stamina and endurance level, and helps strengthen the legs for climbing. then you can increase duration with your exercise routine, running up and down the stairs with some load on your bag is usually what i do. and its good for you to practice on a simple rocky site to begin with...

you should have a full medical checkup first, then decide on what kinds of physical exercises you can do in your condition. mountaineering is all about careful planning, preparation, and practice.. i did mine in indoor gyms. once you know some basic techniques, you can do mountaineering in different kinds of terrain.
