I suppose it depends on what you are looking for doesn't it? As far as mountaineering goes there are two things which are definately not in your favour at the moment. Firstly it is summer here now and secondly there are no 'real' mountains here in Australia.
There is some good sport climbing to be had in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and of course there is the famous Arapiles and The Grampians in Victoria.
Other than that, and if you want some really good mountains then NZ is the place to go. The Southern Alps with Mt Cook is excellent and there is also Mt Aspiring national park where there are some stunning climbs to be had all year round.
My personal favourites are the Inland and Seaward Kaikouras. Not massive by any stretch of the imagination but nonetheless superb and isolated.
Hope this has at least given you some ideas?
Stay safe
