im only 20 and have a keen interest in mountaineering and especially aspire to get involved in high altitude mountaineering. i have no previous experience but can train to a high level of fitness and am up to any challange. what mountain would you suggest i try as my first? it must be climbable in the months of july and august as it is the only free time available to me this year. stok kangri in india was a mountain that looked interesting.

I would look for a guided educational trip. Something like NOLS or Outward Bound, really any school that teaches mountaineering. I know for intstance that NOLS has courses from alaska, to Patagonia, to Himalaya, to Rocky Mountains in wyoming. They are a bit pricey but you get very professional instruction, no previous expirence required and you can rent nearly all your equipment. If you want to learn on your own, start with the basics, i belive it was Paul Petzolt who said "its just camping". so get the skills to go days in the wilderness unsupported, as you work on that start rock climing. Most of all your rope work you learn there will transfer into mountains. Most any mountain will work though, if you going on your own, just turn your hikes into summit attempts on shorter, non technical peaks. as you get more tech skills go for more technical routes. And if you want to go high altitude your glacier travel and rescue, cramponing, self arrest, avalanche evaluation and rescue, and acclimitization techniques are going to have to be top notch. Just remeber, at 25,000ft on a ridge, you still have to set up tents, cook food, melt water, set latrines. all basic stuff. also its going to take time, so dont bite off more than you can chew. Body recoveries suck!! Good luck and have fun!
