Here the gentle Lowlands end abruptly at the Highland Boundary Fault, a massive geological formation that runs through the National Park.

It is also the meeting place of different cultures. In ancient times it straddled the kingdoms of three Celtic peoples - Scots, Picts and Britons - and until recently was the edge of the Gaelic speaking world.
