Dufourspitze
Dufourspitze (4,634 meters high) is a part of the Monte Rosa massif and is Switzerland’s highest mountain. It is also the second highest mountain in The Alps. It was named in honor of Army General Henri Dufour, inventor of the Dufour map and co-founder of the Red Cross. Dufourspitze was first climbed by English alpinists and Swiss guides and porters in 1855. Among the successful climbers was Charles Hudson who died 10 years later on the first ascents of the Matterhorn.
The sight from the summit gives a peculiar feeling looking down on the near Matterhorn. Its peak is easy to find from all sides, but very difficult to climb from the Italian side. The Monte Rosa’s glacier flow in abundance, but only on the northern flanks, where they stream towards the pastures of the Zermatt valley. The south and east side, in contrast, present a dramatic, steep and most impressing wall in Europe with a 2500 meters vertical fall – the Macugnaga wall.
Ideal time to climb the Dufourspitze is from July to September.
