The Picos de Europa consist of three massifs, central (Los Urrielles), western (El Cornion) and eastern (Andara) of limestone, split by the rivers Cares and Duje. Characterised by "hoyos" (deep craters), extensive cave systems, steep gorges, big walls and thousands of crags, the area offers outdoor enthusiasts a complete range of mountain activities. The Picos are well-served by an eclectic range of huts, from the 6 berth Cabana Veronica to the 90+ berth Urriello, both of which are manned and open all year round. The sheltered, south-eastern side of this maritime range enjoys a mediterranean climate, while the north and west tends to soak up the Atlantic frontal systems. From October to May most precipitation falls as snow over 1800m creating a fantastically reliable snow base for winter activities. In summer, high pressure systems tend to dominate. Spains' oldest national park, the Picos de Europa, is home to an amazing array of flora and fauna, largely due to the centuries-old farming practices. Here live rebeccos (the endemic chamois), vultures and snow voles to name a few. Bears and wolves inhabit the dense forests of the surrounding valleys and wild flowers carpet the meadows and alpine pasture.
