Snow Peak started with one man and with one mission. Yukio Yamai (1931--1992) was a great lover of the outdoors, and a pure-hearted enthusiastic climber. Yamia believed that he could enhance and better humanity through mountaineering, and worked long and hard to make mountain climbing a reality for more people.
As he strove to reach mountain peaks, necessity led him to design more reliable and easily handled outdoor gear. Yamai carried prototype crampons and climbing irons to the mountains where he personally tested them and brought them back for redesigning. This process of “hypothesis and verification” led to the high-quality products of his future company: Snow Peak. In 1958 Snow Peak was founded, and Yamai's dream of spreading the benefits of mountaineering to the world began to coming true.
In 1986, Tohru Yamai, our current president, entered the company. Tohru Yamai aggressively promoted the development of general camping gear. Starting with our tents and continuing on through to a wide variety of furniture. The new camping gear enhanced our product line, but there was still a long way to go toward the realization of Yukio Yamai's dream.
Ten year later in 1996, Snow Peak USA was established in Oregon as the first overseas branch. In 1998, we released the world's smallest, lightest, and most compact series of gas powered stoves and lanterns. This series was well received in Japan and the United States, winning the honorable “Editors Choice” award from Backpacker magazine in 1999. In 2001, our white gas stove made its debut in Japan, gained recognition in the United States.
Snow Peak was founded on Yukio Yamai's principles of development, verification, and redevelopment. Continuing on in this spirit we offer tired and true products to our customers, and strive for innovation and progress.
