Mountain Safety Research (MSR) designs, manufactures and markets innovative adventure gear for outdoor enthusiasts. The ever-growing MSR product line is most popular with mountaineers, backpackers and campers. MSR is the industry leader in reliability and quality with every product it focuses on -- tents, stoves, water filters, snowshoes, cookware, climbing gear, fuel and related accessories. All set the benchmark in performance throughout the specialty outdoor industry. MSR is also one of the most widely distributed brands in the outdoor industry. We provide products to more than 1,200 specialty retailers in North America and export to more than 30 countries.
MSR Makes It Look Simple
A lot of engineering and creativity go into every MSR product. The technical complexity is usually subtle, but that's because experience has taught us to keep products simple and elegant. Complex designs are difficult to use and repair under real world conditions. Simple products work longer and are easier to use and maintain.
MSR products may cost a little more than ordinary competing items, but MSR innovations are an exceptional value when you consider the extra margin of reliability. The technically sophisticated consumer appreciates the demonstrable product advantages. This explains why new MSR products launched without much fanfare become popular so quickly.
How Does MSR Do It?
How does MSR successfully introduce one new product innovation after another? The mindset is clear: There's no looking back once you assume a leadership position. Keeping one step ahead of the competition requires the same kind of focus that the founder of MSR inspired over 30 years ago.
We have a corporate culture that is ideal for new ideas that lead to better products for our customer. It's inquisitive, informal, dynamic, challenging and diverse. There's a strong will to push the envelope of what's possible. There's no surer way to get booed around here than to suggest something that would copy a competitor's design. We don't have to because we have no shortage of good ideas.
How MSR products are manufactured is as unique as the company's other business practices. With a history based on rigorous testing and setting specific quality standards, MSR realized it could not depend on others for meeting its manufacturing goals. With a few exceptions, MSR manufactures all products at its facility in Seattle.
Testing
Besides the rigorous testing that takes place at MSR's Seattle facility, real-world tests under extreme conditions continue to provide valuable product feedback. Each year, MSR supports human-powered expeditions that test the limits of human endeavor and product design.
What's Next for MSR?
With a history of one innovation after another, what will MSR do next? No new products can be revealed now, but you can expect more new products with unorthodox designs several times a year. In addition, look forward to the enhancements to existing products that keep MSR at the forefront of innovative design.
