The origins of the BRIDGEDALE brand of outdoor socks can be traced back to 1915 when John Black established his factory in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. He made military socks for front-line troops in World War I and continued making quality hosiery in the original factory until the 1950’s.
A move to the present Newtownards factory in 1957 allowed considerable growth. Under different owners the business evolved and broadened to include both the heavy-duty socks, for which Black was famous, plus everyday socks and nylon stockings for the burgeoning post-war high street consumer trade. The area around the factory is still referred to by older locals as ‘The Nylon’. With the ebb and flow of trade on the high street that part of the business has dwindled, leaving the outdoor sport specific business room to prosper.
The Bridgedale Brand
BRIDGEDALE the brand was first introduced in the 1980’s and has continued to grow ever since. Increasing leisure time on a world scale plus the growth of adventure sports has lead to an expanding range of products designed for of all types of outdoor activities. BRIDGEDALE now distributes to almost 40 countries world-wide – from Australia to Argentina and from America to Austria.
We now enter the challenges of the 21st century - changes in footwear design, evolving recreational habits and even the size and shape of feet means that BRIDGEDALE cannot keep still. Advances in knitting technology, advances in yarn functions and advances in our customer’s requirements keep us busy. BRIDGEDALE will continue to research and develop products for this ever changing market.
