Tavan Bogd - Outer Mongolia's Western Frontier
Located in the remotest corner of the most pristine and wildest country in the world Tavan Bogd area comprises of clear lakes, rushing streams, lush alpine pastures, snow capped peaks and vast glaciers. All the above make the area perfect for trekking, hiking, mountain biking, apart from mountaineering.
Home to a number of Mongolia's exceptionally authentic ethnicities, Tavan Bogd area has a wealth of culture and ancient history to offer to adventurous travellers. Here lie the tombs of nomadic warlords of 6th century AD, next to their even more distant ancestors who left whole galleries of rock carving art.
Located at altitudes above 2500m above sea level and sparsely populated, it is one of the cleanest eco-systems even in Mongolia. Whether you like high altitude trekking hiking, mountain biking or just camping in the wild - think of Tavan Bogd.
The Altai Tavan Bogd mountains are the highest peaks in the Mongol Altai Range, which stretches some 2,000km from the Gobi desert to the Greater Himalaya in Pakistan. The Five Saints include Mt Khuiten (4,354m), Mongolia's highest peak, Mt Nairamdal (Friendship), which marks the intersection of the borders of Russia, China and Mongolia, and Mt Snow Church (4,100m), arguably the most beautiful mountain in NE Asia. These are a challenge for amateur climbers and for professionals alike.

| Hiking | Starting off at legendary lakes of Hoton and Hurgan we make our way through green meadows, lush forests and icy gorges. Myriads of flowers and other vegetation entertain eyes of those coming in July and early August. Hundreds of “kereksur” or tombs left by various ancient tribes lie alongside our trail. Finally we reach foothills of the “Five Saints of Altai”, the highest mountains in Mongolia. Here, facing cold glaciated peaks and vast moraines beneath them time stands still.
This journey is a huge spiritual challenge to rediscover yourself as well as a wealth of cultural experience in the caring company of local nomads and hunters.

From the milky white Tsagaan river banks the trail gradually ascends through a high mountain terrain of rocks and wetlands to the base camp of the highest peaks of Tavan Bogd. Not needing luck you will see some of the wildlife that inhabits the area including marmots, hares and a number of birds such us Golden Eagles, Black Vultures and Falcons.
Upon completing two thirds’ of the way there open majestic perspectives of Potanin and Alexander glaciers backed by icy peaks of Khuiten (4374m), Nairamdal (4082m), Snowchurch (4071m), Malchin (4050m), and Cradle (4113m). This evening we camp at 2900m.

Over to the north, weather permitting, you will see the massif of Mt.Belukha (4500m) lying in Russia.
Khuiten Peak is the main challenge for mountaineers. To reach its foothill we need to cross the Potanin glacier, which lies in between. A middle camp will be made below the eastern face of Khuiten. Though technically moderate we traverse a number of crevasses before the ascent. Khuiten, the highest peak of the Mongolian Altai affords tremendous views over China and Russia and all what mountaineers climb for.
