Other Collections - Other Summits for Mountaineers

The Seven Summits is just one of the many Collections that climbers aim for. Climbers are known to be incurable collectors. The appeal of climbing the highest mountain - in the world, in a continent, in a country or state - is obvious since such mountains will attract more attention than lower peaks nearby. But in addition, climbers are drawn to Mountain Collection as they give them a greater long-term objective that might take years to complete. These collections exist at all kinds of levels: starting from climbing all the peaks from the Scottish Munros to the ultimate high-altitude challenge of climbing all 14 of the 8000m peaks.

Collections may not only be defined by height, but they may be a group of difficult classics, such as the six great Alpine North Faces, or a variety of climbs with nothing in common, apart from being selected for a well known book e.g. Gaston Rebuffat's One Hundred Best Routes of the Mont Blanc Massif. Such collections give many climbers direction and focus. To demonstrate the almost limitless possibilities, here is a selection of Mountaineering Collections:
  • The 14 8000m peaks
  • The Russian Snow Leopard - the five 7000m peaks in the CIS
  • The 18 Trekking Peaks of Nepal
  • The Second Seven (the second highest mountain on each continent)
  • The Seven Island Summits
  • The Munros
  • The Alpine 4000m peaks
  • Teh six great North Faces of the Alps (Eiger, Matterhorn, Grandes Jorasses, Petit Dru, Piz Badile and Cima Ovest)
  • The Equatorial Snowcaps
  • The 50 USA state high points
  • The South American 6000m Peaks
  • The Colorado 14000 feet Peaks
  • The Three Poles (South and North Poles and the Everest)

So don't limit yourself only to the Seven Summits. With the combination of a great imagination and determination, it is possible to reach the Other Collection of Summits of the different mountains in the world. So if you think that climbing all of the Seven Summits is unattainable for now, don't fret because you still have a lot of other options available.
